Individual Vision

What is your vision of promoting CTE in the high school setting? How does this vision tie in with CCLS? Will the new CCLS promote or hinder CTE?

  1. My vision of promoting CTE in high school English is to integrate more materials tied into their future careers and work at BOCES, to help students prepare for adult life and the workforce with real-life issues such as writing resumes, conducting interviews, budgeting, preparing for retirement, etc., and to work on different modes of expression: writing for different purposes, reading diverse pieces, using technology for presentations, and learning to better use diverse sources to help them to become better communicators. This vision does tie in with CCLS in that it incorporates more non-fiction and helps prepare students for the demands of today's workforce. However, CCLS may hinder CTE if their benchmarks and expectations are specifically geared towards students who are college-bound. This may cause a problem in allowing ample time to incorporate both CTE curriculum with other demands of CCLS.

  2. CTE curricula, like that of all other disciplines, should incorporate strategies that promote cognitive engagement, constructivist learning and 21st Century Skills, as outlined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

  3. I envision a collaborative environment between departments, such as English Language Arts and Business. By co-teaching courses students will be able to apply academic studies to real-life scenarios, such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Students will have an opportunity to understanding the career-paths related to their future careers and trades developed at BOCES. Students who have developed trades at BOCES will have an opportunity to write a business plan, to become future entrepreneurs. I believe this approach will enable students to make connections between their school experience and their future academic and career prospects. CTE curricula is a natural fit for this type of combined course and the CCLS will ensure that the students have the academic knowledge to achieve 21st century workforce skills.

  4. Hey there,

We're doing a similar grant at the Middle School this year. I would like to specifically align the CCSS with our Career Academy model in 7th grade. If you could share the final outcome of your work on this study group, I would appreciate it. Also, I agree with George. CTE is not a less rigorous path. In some ways, it is a MORE rigorous one. A CTE diploma (a possibility in the near future) prepares students for college AND career. We should never view is as an "either or" type of scenario. I love the idea of interdisciplinary courses - thats how we should think and work "in real life", so why not in school as well? Onward to the 21st Century! :) - Mrs. W
